You may think only older people need to worry about having a stroke, but it can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time.  Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S. and the number-one cause of long-term disability. Stroke deaths are preventable. The most important factor is time.

Stroke Prevention Awareness Month in May brought a panel of experts to the podcast, hosted by Jonathan Fialkow, M.D., chief population health office at Baptist Health South Florida. Their discussion ranged from stroke symptoms and risk factors to what to do if you see someone who is experiencing a stroke.

Screening for Brain Aneurysms

Rupture of a Brain aneurysm is a debilitating, often fatal type of stroke.

Brain aneurysms typically have no symptoms until the time of rupture.

Brain aneurysms can run in families, and screening at-risk patients and family members allows for detection and treatment before rupture. 

The Marilyn & Stanley Barry Center for Cerebrovascular Disease & Stroke at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute now offers screening for at-risk patients at their new Brain Aneurysm Clinic.   

Patients who may be a candidate for screening include those with:

  • Family history of brain aneurysm and/or brain aneurysm rupture

  • Females with high blood pressure and/or tobacco or alcohol use

  • Polycystic kidney disease

  • Ehler-Danlos Sydrome

  • Fibromuscular dysplasia

  • Sickle Cell Disease

  • Coarctation of aorta/bicuspid aortic valve

  • Acromegaly

“Electrical stimulation has helped three people with spinal-cord injuries to regain control over their leg muscles and improve their walking.

It even enabled one of them who couldn’t previously walk to walk with assistance.

“It’s a tremendous step forward,” says rehabilitation-medicine researcher Chet Moritz of the University of Washington in Seattle, who was not involved in the research.

Importantly, all of the participants retained some improvement in muscle movement even after the stimulation therapy had stopped, and two retained improvements in walking ability.

But researchers caution that the technique, called epidural electrical stimulation, is in its early stages and that it is not clear for what proportion of injured people it could work. So far, it has been demonstrated only in people who retained some level of motor function below their injuries.”

"The following day Adele’s condition drastically deteriorated when she lost her sight and felt dizzy while cleaning the bathroom. She rested for a minute where after gathering her strength crawled to the phone and called Campbell for help. But after a few moments, she dropped the phone mid-conversation and passed out again. Terrified Campbell rushed home and found his wife unable to speak or move and the right side of her face was drooping – he immediately called for an ambulance. It was confirmed at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, that Adele suffered a stroke following dissection of the vertebral artery – a clot caused by trauma in the neck which stops blood getting to the brain. The incident left Adele unable to drive which meant she couldn’t work and had to sell their home."
